Academics Kenya Utalii College is a government owned hospitality and tourism training institution established in 1973. Since its inception, the college has gained a wealth of experience in training for the tourism industry, both in Kenya and in the African region as a whole. The Colege today is a leading trainer and a pace setter in the hospitality and tourism industry. The Academic division, is headed by the Director of Studies, assisted by two Deputy Directors of Studies. In the Academic Division, there are 14 departments with 85 permanent staff, 9 part-time lecturers and 1 expatriate lecturer from Japan. The College offers eight full time courses, namely: The college has endevoured to maintain high academic standards of international standards. Some of the programmes are accredited by leading global instituions including: the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Tourism Education Quality (TEDQUAL) Themis Foundation. This This has earned the college the prestigious UNWTO Education and Science Council membership. Kenya Utalii College is also a certified Centre of Excellence in Hospitality and Tourism training in Africa. The college is currently at an advanced stage in attaining ISO Certification. This is in line with its vision to be the world’s leading centre of excellence in hospitality and tourism training. It is also in line with her mission 'To Develop a Highly Qualified Human Resource Base for the Hospitality Industry through Training, Research and Consultancy'. To keep abreast with the ever changing needs of the industry, the college through the Kenya Utalii College – Tourism Industry Liaison Committee has established partnership with the industry , in its training activities. In addition to the full time courses, the Kenya Utalii College conducts in-Service courses for hospitality industry employees on an annual basis. This programme on average equips about 1,200 industry employees per year with updated skills and knowledge. Further, about 120 Managers in the industry benefit from the Management Development Programmes conducted annually. Internship Programmethe College aims at producing graduates ready to integrate into the job market upon graduation. In this regard, the College's academic policy requires all students to undergo internship before they graduate. The industrial attachment, ranging from 2 months to 6 months, is undertaken mainly in the hotels, lodges, other hospitality establishments, travel and tour establishments in the country or abroad , in line with the students career interests. Industry Acceptance of College graduatesKenya Utalii College has for a long time been the main source of trained manpower for the tourism industry. The College's graduates are readily accepted into the industry due to their hands on training, diligence and professionalism. The college also provides human resources for the international labour market and many of her alumni today work all over the world in different capacities. |
